Wirkungsmechanismen von Luftporen bildenden Zusatzmitteln (Teil 1)
Operating mechanism of air-entraining admixtures (part 1)
Eickschen, Eberhard
– Pavement concrete is heavily exposed to de-icing salt and must therefore be produced as air-entrained concrete. The production of an appropriate air-entrained concrete requires comprehensive initial testing that must take account of the main factors that affect the formation of air voids (starting materials, concrete composition, fresh concrete temperate and mixing time). Corresponding requirements for the composition and production of air-entrained concrete are laid down in the regulatory data and have proved successful in the past. However, a greatly increased air void content in the solid concrete has been found in recent years with some sections of concrete pavement – especially when air-entraining agents based on synthetic active constituents have been used. The initial results of investigations by the FIZ (Research Institute of the Cement Industry) with pavement concretes and normal commercial air-entraining agents showed that a substantial increase in the air content occurs only if, as a consequence of too short a mixing time during production, excess air-entraining agent has been added to the fresh concrete in order to achieve the desired air content. The fresh concrete then contains insufficiently digested and activated air-entraining agent. In this case the air content can increase on subsequent input of mixing energy into the fresh concrete. However, it was not possible to make an accurate determination of the interactions between air-entraining active constituent, mixing time and addition level. Investigations were therefore carried out into air void formation in mortars, foam formation in cement suspensions and the sorption behaviour in flotation trials and in cement pastes. The test results show that a subsequent increase in the air content due to addition of excess air-entraining agent as a result of shortened mixing time is to be expected only with air-entraining agents based on synthetic active constituents. This is because the molecular structure of the synthetic active constitutents, which easens air void formation. –
